Billy Farmer retired as a band director / music teacher from Wake County Schools in 1996.
His interest in drawing began at a very early age. He was mostly self-taught until the 1980's when he began taking art courses at Barton College.
He continued these studies with private classes and in workshops with Charlie Reid, Tony van Hasselt, Arne Westerman, LouAnna Winner and Pat Bowers. He also received instruction in critique sessions with Joe Cox, former head of the School of Design at N. C. State University and with Ben Williams former curator of the N. C. State Museum of Art.
His shows and exhibitions in North Carolina have been at Art Centers in Wilson, Goldsboro, Nash County, Nashville, The Woman’s Club of Raleigh, The Sunflower Studio and Gallery in Wake Forest, Forest Hill Club in Wilson, Green Park Inn in Blowing Rock, and The Little Art Gallery in Raleigh.
